IPFA/PEI 21st International Workshop on Surveillance and Screening of Blood Borne Pathogens, Rome, Italy

IPFA/PEI 21st International Workshop on “Surveillance and Screening of Blood Borne Pathogens”

Record attendance and International participation at this year’s event!

The annual IPFA/PEI Workshop was held in Rome on the 21-22 May and achieved its objective of providing a relevant, informative and inclusive meeting attended by a record 250 delegates from 40 countries and from all continents.

A truly international event maintaining its tradition of promoting scientific discussion, debate and cooperation amongst professionals with an interest in and responsibility for a safe and secure supply of blood and plasma products throughout the world.

We are grateful to our hosts Dr Guiliano Grazzini (Italian National Blood Centre - ISS) and Dr Claudio Velati (Italian Society for Transfusion Medicine and Immunohaematology) for opening the meeting with comprehensive and engaging overviews of the Italian blood system, strategies for plasma collection and analysis of potential transfusion transmissible infections in Italy.
Dr Harvey Alter opened the scientific programme with an authoritative keynote presentation tracing the evolution of hepatitis and blood safety and set the scene for discussion of HCV inactivation methods and, importantly the now current prospects of a ‘cure’ for HCV infection.
Subsequent sessions addressed:

  • Pathogen removal and inactivation in blood components and plasma derivatives
  • Discussion of the need for and value of interventions for borderline transfusion risks such as CMV, HEV, Malaria and Syphilis
  • Donation screening algorithms and their practical implications for donor deferral and potential donor re-entry
  • Scientific studies and technical developments from supporting industries
  • Current approaches to managing the risk from West Nile Virus and Dengue and the current estimates of vCJD risk in the UK donor and general population
  • Efficacy and ethics of and compliance with donor exclusion policies, in particular MSM exclusion/deferral

This two day Workshop was characterized by authoritative presentations, vigorous and engaged discussion and a spirit of cooperation between all stakeholders. We are deeply indebted to all who contributed to the success of the meeting including our commercial sponsors without whose support the meeting would not be possible.

We look forward to welcoming you all to our 22nd IPFA/PEI Workshop in Prague, Czech Republic.
